Rita: Volunteering always makes me smile

I became a dog walker in 2003. One day a sweet pit mix named Rudy was being walked by another volunteer. That volunteer came running over saying Rudy had backed out if his collar & to tell one of the staff. I quickly ran inside to let them know & within minutes multiple staff & volunteers came out of the bldg. to find Rudy. Two staff members also in a car went up the road. Luckily Rudy had stopped to say ‘hi’ to another dog who was out in his yard & was quickly caught. As I was watching, I saw the car pull back in to Lollypop Farm, Rudy was in the back seat smiling with his head out the window! A big sigh of relief. Both Lollypop Farm staff & volunteers showed a great team effort to get Rudy back to the shelter safely. From then on, Rudy was required to a wear harness when being walked! I have so many stories that made me smile when I was a volunteer dog walker!

Stephanie: From Potential Pet Parent to Volunteer to Advocate/Supporter

I first became familiar with Lollypop in college when a friend adopted a cat. It was a few years before I had another run in with the organization. That happened while I was teaching and a humane enforcement officer came to speak with the students. At that point I decided I wanted to volunteer. Being allergic to cats, I opted to volunteer as a dog walker. It was such a wonderful experience.

The dogs at Lollypop quickly learned who was there to get them outside, and they were always so excited to see me as I approached. Other dogs in the same suites would pick up on what was happening and would get more and more excited as I worked my way through the suite. I met so many wonderful animals that surely completed they families into which they were adopted, but the one who sticks in my head the most is Diamond. She has probably passed on by now, but she was incredible. She was a black lab mix puppy, about a year old. Truth be told, I am a sucker for black dogs and black labs in particular. So, I may be a bit biased. Anyway, Diamond would love to go out and play in the fenced area, enjoy the walks around the farm and just love to sit and get treats and pets. Had I not already had a dog at home (who was absolutely wonderful too, but quite a handful), I would have made Diamond part of my family. However, I was lucky enough to see the family who adopted her on their way home with her and told them they had a great dog. I am sure she brought them much love and happiness.

After a while, Lollypop started recruiting volunteers for a new program they were going to offer, Pet Peeves. I was no longer teaching at this point, and could commit more volunteer hours to training and staffing the hotline. So, I applied to be part of the dog help staff. I went through the program and worked the dog hotline for a while. I eventually trained on the cat hotline as well. Unfortunately, due to the birth of my first child, I no longer had the time to commit volunteer hours, and I had to step away. I will always cherish my time as Lollypop volunteer and I hope to come back someday once my children are out of school.

I do hope that Lollypop continues to offer and expand its programming, not just for the animals sake, but for the benefit and enrichment of the community too. Lollypop does an immense amount of good for our area, and it’s comforting to know, after all these years, they’re still there from adoptions, farm care, school age programs, birthday parties, humane enforcement, etc. Lollypop is truly a force in the animal welfare community, and it is my hope that it sticks around for the foreseeable and unforeseeable future.

Deborah: We Adopted a Repeat Offender

On Mother’s Day 1994 we adopted a repeat offender. Adopting a family dog was to be my Mother’s Day present. As my husband, 6 and 8 year old sons, and I entered Lollipop Farm we were greeted by a volunteer sitting with a large, black, handsome 18-month old dog sporting a spiffy kerchief around his neck and perfectly groomed. His name was Muttlee and he was the longest tenant at Lollipop Farm and they were hoping to find him a home soon. We hadn’t seen it, but he was even featured on the news that week!
Apparently, he had been adopted twice before but was a little too exuberant for both owners. He had the habit of literally springing up on all fours and barking in time with each bounce each time someone approached his kennel. Apparently that put some people off. Not us! We thought he was hilarious and we were smitten with his character! We drove him home that day — he had his head in my lap the entire way home.❤️
We changed his name to Dudley, and he was indeed an exuberant boy. He would do his spring and bark every time it was time to go for a walk or score a treat He would leap through the back yard like a stag and I would imagine he was thinking “I’m a lucky dog!” with each leap. He had two kids who grew up with him and adored him right up to his last breath, which he took with his head in my lap as we told him what a good dog he was and how lucky we were to have been able to give a repeat offender a loving home.

I adopted Lexi after I lost my cat Spencer On Easter Sunday 4/21/19. I was heartbroken. By October I was ready for another cat. I went to Lollypop where I met 2 cats that both had health issues. The 3rd one was Lexi. She immediately ran to my friend meowing & then to me. My 1st words were “I love her” She had almost no hair due to a severe flea allergy. Now 3yrs later, a few pounds heavier & such luxurious silky hair. She greets at the door, talks to me & sleeps w/me. Thank you so very much to everyone at Lollypop.

Dawn: You get more than you give

My story begins 35 years ago when I moved to Fairport and started bringing my niece and nephew to see the animals on the farm. They loved it and so did I. We did this for many years and then they moved away and I would only have them for one week each summer. Still they remembered and wanted to visit the farm. In the meantime I adopted a lovely cat and she was the best cat ever! Isabel lived over 17 years but before she passed away, I started volunteering in the Day Lily Cat Room. Fast forward to the present and we now have Cleo and Alex who allow us to live in their house. I so enjoy the animals and the staff. I have learned so much about cat behavior and now mice and rat behavior! But I also do dishes and laundry because there’s always something that needs doing. No matter what, I always get more enjoyment than I give!! what a wonderful organization to have in our community.

Bernadette: Izzy: Friend, Protector, Companion.

My Jerry lost his 21 year old Candy in 2004. He didn’t want another dog. Then, in 2016 he started talking about getting a dog – not too small and not too big. The caring staff at Lollypop introduced me to Izzy. She was said to be shy and a bit skittish. My handler warned me not to expect too much from Izzy on our first visit, but said somehow she seemed like a perfect fit for me. When the door opened, Izzy walked straight over to me and laid her head in my lap. Instant bonding! I fell in love with her, despite the fact she looked nothing like the adoptees is had imagined. I don’t know how the wonderful lady who paired her with me knew we’d be a match. What I did know was Lollypop’s staff connects their animals’ hearts to people’s hearts. That attribute is what has inspired me to help you to continue bringing loving people together with animals needing love. My hope for Lollypop Farm is that you will expand your outreach to widowed seniors like me, who if connected with an abandoned dog, cat, horse, bunny, etc. will find reasons to continue to be proactive in their lives and hoping for better tomorrows.

When my husband died last September, there was just Izzy and me left. She sensed my pain, and I sensed hers. We both loved him very much. She was patient with me, then gradually made me take notice of having to start living our new life. Methodically she has made me resume our evening walks and shopping excursions. Izzy stays close to me. She is an exceptional watch dog. I feel safe even though my knight is no longer physically here. Thank you Lollypop for matching me with a rescue who is now rescuing me. Hopefully, everyone reading this will feel as blessed as I do.

I knew I couldn’t wait 4 years so I looked on Lollypop Farm and found Sophy 3wks later, went to meet her, and fell in love. She’s our third miniature poodle, combination of our last 2. A sweet girl who loves to do whatever I’m doing. I rescued her and she rescued me. I hope all the animals at Lollypop find loving homes and I thank them for the wonderful work they do.

Kay: Our Piper

My husband and I adopted a small dog named Piper last year. She has been an amazing addition to our family. Besides being very friendly and energetic, she loves to run in the yard. She also seems to watch out for our senior dog who is blind and deaf. Piper is great with our granddaughter and welcomes anyone that we welcome. She does show some signs that she wasn’t well treated in the past which makes us want to prove to her even more that humans can be trusted. We love her. Our hope is that all of the animals at Lollipop Farm find warm and loving homes.
